   Sefton Sea Anglers: History

Sefton Sea Anglers was founded in 1976; the dozen or so founder members having been members of the Maghull & District Angling Club Section, Maghull being a predominantly fresh-water fishing club. With the growth of the sea angling section it was felt necessary to amicably break away and form an exclusively sea angling club.

Membership grew and for several years averaged 30-40. Meetings were held at Walton Prison Officers Social Club then we moved to B R Social Club then to Stalmine Social Club and finally to Dunny’s Social Club in Stalmine Road, Walton where we have now been based for many years. We meet there every second Monday evening.

Sefton Sea Aglers - North West Association of Sea Angling ClubsSSA have been affiliated to the NWASAC (North West Association of Sea Angling Clubs) since our inception. We are also affiliated members of the NFSA (National Federation of Sea Anglers) both to support them and for their support when required. Members tend to have a preference for either shore or boat angling, both charter and trailed boats but many do both and we all try to get together to fish our annual Fur & Feather Christmas Match.

Our membership has steadily grown but not without its ups and downs and is currently again approaching 100 members. We have few junior members unfortunately, and in their interest we insist that juniors have a parent or guardian present.

Currently beach angling is mainly carried out locally with monthly matches at the many Merseyside venues and also North Wales. Occasionally trips are made to more distant venues.

Charter boat angling venues tend to be more distant with regular trips to Aberdovey, Pwhelli, Anglesey and Conway etc. with an odd weekend or longer break to the south coast of Ireland. Autumn and winter fishing tends to be Mersey based.
Trailed boats mostly fish the Mersey or Liverpool Bay that can offer can offer excellent fishing, plus longer boat forays to Ireland, S. Wales and the south coast.

Over the years we have completed with other anglers and clubs with some success in boat and shore competitions e.g. NWASAC Wilkinson Sword Boat KO, but have found lately most members prefer sport fishing to match fishing.

The name of SSA is well known in sea angling circles. We have, especially in conjunction with the NWASAC and NFSA, campaigned over the decades against the threats to sea angling both locally and nationally. Also access to venues e.g. Liverpool Docklands, conservation of fish e.g. size limits, bass conservation, gill netting, fishing all our matches on measure and release basis.

Sefton Sea Angler's PresidentOur president has been a MAF/DEFRA appointee for 15 years to the NW and North Wales Sea Fisheries Committee, doing his best to fight the angler’s corner against greedy and wasteful commercial fishing interests. In the last month or so we have submitted detailed response to DEFRA’s strategy documents – ‘Marine Strategy’ and ‘Recreational Sea Angling’.
